I want to put my art historian sleuthing skills to work at one of the happiest places on Earth, searching for all the specific artistic and architectural references and models for Disneyland Imagineers.
Because why not? Everyone needs a serious hobby.
In reality, I've been searching for more than twenty years. Yes, I am a big nerd who loves Disneyland, history, art history, and scavenger hunts. Looking for all the specific art history references at Disneyland is like a complex puzzle that is endlessly entertaining. Adding to the challenge are the attractions themselves. Some of them have so many references that you can't possibly see them all on only a few rides. Guess what that means? Repeat rides! Well, that and hoping that the attraction will break down and the lights will go on with me conveniently in front of something so that I can study it and scribble in my notebooks. I have many Field Books filled with notes and musings.
Are you interested in a Disneyland art history scavenger hunt?
If you answered yes to the question above, then you've come to the right place! Come along with me as I locate more references to art and architecture from across the world. In the past few years, I've realized there are probably other people (beyond my students and my husband) who would enjoy locating these very specific things in Disneyland attractions, queues, stores, and lands. I am almost done with the first draft of the initial book because, of course, I will have more than one. They can be enjoyed by kids, but these are definitely geared toward teens and adults. Some of the references are not entirely kid-friendly! 😳
With a dose of pixie dust, I should be ready with some exciting updates soon enough.
For now, though, you can see a fun tally on this page of my website.
