Disney castles. If you've ever watched a Disney animated movie or walked into a Disney Park, you know the castle is the icon we associate most with Disney besides a talking mouse. In many films, castles and royal palaces lend so much to the story, evoking distant, fantastical pasts. They feel both magical and timeless, yet their designs draw on real places.

I've put together a free illustrated guide exploring some of the actual buildings that inspired Disney artists, designers, and Imagineers. Eleven locations, some famous and iconic, others lesser known and perhaps surprising, from Neuschwanstein in Germany to Pagaruyung Palace in Indonesia to Mont-Saint-Michel in France. Along the way, you'll see how art and architectural history helped create the magical settings we know and love, from Disneyland to Beauty and the Beast, Moana, Brave, and more.

My hope is that learning about these historical buildings deepens your appreciation for these places and their cultures, and sharpens your eye for spotting real world inspirations behind Disney's designs. If you're a Disney fan, I think these connections will deepen your love for the films and Parks too. They certainly have for me.

One quick note: Disney has romanticized or simplified some complex cultural traditions over the years. Inspiration can be messy. Still, I believe Disney Parks and movies can serve as launch points for important conversations and deeper historical engagement.

Ready to see where the magic really came from? You'll learn about the real places behind Disney's castles and palaces—well, at least some of them!
